Immersa nel cuore della Contrada Valle e risalente alla seconda metà del XVIII secolo, la Chiesa di San Rocco fu costruita in un periodo di espansione del borgo dal Castello verso l'attuale centro, ed è una testimonianza della crescita del paese lungo le attuali Via Vittorio Emanuele e Via Pisciolo, che gravitano intorno alla vivace Piazza Plebiscito.

La chiesa subì danni significativi durante il devastante terremoto del 1857, e successivamente anche nel 1980, ma venne ricostruita e restaurata, mantenendo la sua importanza per la comunità locale.

All'esterno, la Chiesa di San Rocco si presenta con una facciata sobria, caratterizzata da un elegante portale in pietra e lesene con capitelli semplici. Sul tetto si notano due campanili a vela con campanelle, che conferiscono un tocco pittoresco all'edificio. La chiesa si affaccia su un piccolo marciapiede pedonale, a ridosso del corso principale del paese, Viale Vittorio Emanuele III, un punto di partenza perfetto per passeggiare e scoprire altre meraviglie del centro storico.

Entrando, la chiesa rivela una struttura a navata unica, con il presbiterio leggermente rialzato rispetto al piano di calpestio e delimitato da un arco e una balaustra in legno. La copertura del presbiterio è caratterizzata da una volta a botte unghiata, mentre la navata presenta un suggestivo tavolato in legno.

Il vero cuore della chiesa è l'altare ligneo settecentesco, che ospita una nicchia con la statua di San Rocco, protettore dei pellegrini e degli ammalati, venerato con grande devozione dagli abitanti di Viggiano. Ai lati dell'altare, due nicchie ospitano altre statue, tra cui quella di Sant'Antonio Abate. Inoltre, sulle pareti della navata, si possono ammirare le statue del Sacro Cuore e dell'Immacolata, posizionate su eleganti mensole che arricchiscono l'ambiente con un tocco di spiritualità.

La pavimentazione interna in piastrelle di cotto e il tetto a padiglione ricoperto di tegole a coppi in cotto sono dettagli che richiamano la tradizione locale e contribuiscono a creare un'atmosfera accogliente e autentica.

Located in the heart of Contrada Valle and dating back to the second half of the 18th century, the Church of San Rocco was built during a period of village expansion from the Castle toward the current center. It testifies to the town's growth along today’s Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Pisciolo, centered around the lively Piazza Plebiscito.

The church was significantly damaged by the devastating 1857 earthquake, and again in 1980, but was rebuilt and restored, preserving its importance to the local community.

On the outside, the Church of San Rocco features a sober façade, marked by an elegant stone portal and pilasters with simple capitals. On the roof are two bell gables with small bells, giving the building a picturesque charm. The church overlooks a small pedestrian sidewalk, right next to the town's main street, Viale Vittorio Emanuele III, making it the perfect starting point for exploring the historical center.

Inside, the church reveals a single nave structure, with the presbytery slightly elevated from the floor and marked by an arch and a wooden balustrade. The presbytery is covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, while the nave features a charming wooden ceiling.

At the heart of the church stands an 18th-century wooden altar, hosting a niche with the statue of Saint Rocco, protector of pilgrims and the sick, venerated with great devotion by the people of Viggiano. Two side niches house additional statues, including Saint Anthony Abbot. The walls of the nave display statues of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Virgin, resting on elegant shelves that enhance the church's spiritual ambiance.

The terracotta tile flooring and the pavilion roof covered with curved terracotta tiles are details that echo local tradition, creating a welcoming and authentic atmosphere.

Situada en el corazón de la Contrada Valle y que data de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, la Iglesia de San Roque fue construida durante una fase de expansión del pueblo desde el Castillo hacia el centro actual. Es testimonio del crecimiento del pueblo a lo largo de Via Vittorio Emanuele y Via Pisciolo, en torno a la animada Piazza Plebiscito.

La iglesia sufrió daños significativos durante el devastador terremoto de 1857, y también en 1980, pero fue reconstruida y restaurada, conservando su importancia para la comunidad local.

En el exterior, la iglesia muestra una fachada sobria, caracterizada por un elegante portal de piedra y pilastras con capiteles sencillos. En el techo hay dos campanarios de espadaña con campanillas, que le dan un aire pintoresco. La iglesia da a una pequeña acera peatonal, junto a la calle principal, Viale Vittorio Emanuele III, un lugar ideal para comenzar a descubrir el centro histórico.

En el interior, la iglesia presenta una estructura de nave única, con el presbiterio ligeramente elevado respecto al suelo, delimitado por un arco y una balaustrada de madera. El presbiterio tiene una bóveda de cañón con lunetos, y la nave un techo de madera muy evocador.

En el centro destaca el altar de madera del siglo XVIII, que alberga una hornacina con la estatua de San Roque, protector de peregrinos y enfermos, venerado con gran devoción por los habitantes de Viggiano. A los lados del altar hay otras estatuas, como la de San Antonio Abad. En las paredes de la nave se encuentran las estatuas del Sagrado Corazón y de la Inmaculada, colocadas en elegantes repisas que embellecen el ambiente espiritual.

El suelo de baldosas de terracota y el techo a cuatro aguas cubierto con tejas curvas de barro son detalles que remiten a la tradición local, creando una atmósfera acogedora y auténtica.

Die im Herzen der Contrada Valle gelegene Kirche San Rocco stammt aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts und wurde in einer Phase der Dorferweiterung vom Schloss zum heutigen Zentrum erbaut. Sie zeugt vom Wachstum des Dorfes entlang der heutigen Via Vittorio Emanuele und Via Pisciolo, rund um die lebendige Piazza Plebiscito.

Die Kirche wurde beim verheerenden Erdbeben von 1857 und erneut 1980 stark beschädigt, aber wiederaufgebaut und restauriert, wobei sie ihre Bedeutung für die lokale Gemeinschaft bewahrte.

Außen präsentiert sich die Kirche mit einer schlichten Fassade, die durch ein elegantes Steinportal und Pilaster mit einfachen Kapitellen geprägt ist. Auf dem Dach befinden sich zwei Glockengiebel mit kleinen Glocken, die dem Gebäude einen malerischen Charakter verleihen. Die Kirche liegt an einem kleinen Fußweg, direkt neben der Hauptstraße Viale Vittorio Emanuele III – idealer Ausgangspunkt für einen Spaziergang durch das historische Zentrum.

Im Inneren zeigt sich eine einschiffige Struktur, mit einem leicht erhöhten Presbyterium, das durch einen Bogen und eine Holzbalustrade abgegrenzt ist. Das Presbyterium ist mit einem Tonnengewölbe mit Stichkappen bedeckt, das Kirchenschiff hat eine charmante Holzdecke.

Das Herzstück der Kirche ist der barocke Holzaltar aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, in dem sich eine Nische mit der Statue des Heiligen Rocco befindet, Schutzpatron der Pilger und Kranken, von den Einwohnern von Viggiano mit großer Hingabe verehrt. Seitlich befinden sich weitere Statuen, darunter der Heilige Antonius Abt. An den Wänden der Kirche stehen Statuen des Heiligsten Herzens Jesu und der Unbefleckten Empfängnis, auf eleganten Konsolen, die die spirituelle Atmosphäre unterstreichen.

Der Terrakottaboden im Inneren und das Walmdach mit gebrannten Dachziegeln erinnern an lokale Traditionen und schaffen eine warme, authentische Atmosphäre.
